Miss Nithya Ratnavelu is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynaecological Oncologist. She holds a particular expertise in managing disorders of the vulva and serves as the regional Complex Vulva Disorders Lead. Miss Ratnavelu is accredited by the British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology as a Colposcopist and excels in minimal access surgery for both benign conditions and cancer.Passionate about holistic patient care, Miss Ratnavelu emphasises the importance of women caring for other women with empathy and understanding, especially in accessing female gynaecologists during times of symptoms or concerns.After completing her medical qualification in 2003, Miss Ratnavelu undertook rigorous training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology across Northern Ireland and the West of Scotland. Her pursuit of specialisation led her to focus on Gynaecological Oncology in Gateshead, where she also obtained a Masters in Clinical Research from Newcastle University in 2011.In her current role, Miss Ratnavelu leads the weekly Regional Gynaecological Cancer meetings, serving a catchment area that includes North East England and Cumbria, covering a female population exceeding 2.5 million. She also holds the position of Cancer Lead for Surgical Specialties at Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust.Beyond clinical practice, Miss Ratnavelu holds multiple roles with the British Gynaecological Cancer Society, including representing the North of England on the Council, collaborating with the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), and contributing to the Guidelines Committee. Her dedication to advancing gynaecological oncology is reflected in her active involvement in shaping national policies and standards of care in her field.
