Obstetrician & Gynaecologist
Dr Ian Harley is a Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynaecological Oncologist. He is based at the Northern Ireland Regional Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital but also performs private work at the Ulster Independent Clinic. He specialises in gynaecological and ovarian cancers and minimal access surgery in gynaecology and oncology. His other areas of interest include menstrual disorders, post-menopausal bleeding, cancer prevention, menorrhagia and hereditary cancers. After studying medicine at Queen's University of Belfast, he entered the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) training programme in the Northern Ireland Deanery. He then completed his Gynaecological Oncologist training at University of Toronto in Canada. He was awarded his Postgraduate Medical Doctorate (MD) by Queen's University for his research on hereditary ovarian cancer. In 2008 he was appointed a Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist at the Belfast City Hospital. Dr Harley has an active interest in teaching and research. He is published regularly in peer-reviewed journals and presents at regional, national and international meetings. In 2013 he was awarded an Honorary Lectureship at the Queen's University Belfast. He is an overseas mentor and external examiner at the University of West Indies (UWI) / International Gynaecological Cancer Society (IGCS).
