Dr Katherine Papanikolaou is a specialist in foetal medicine at The Sainsbury Wing of Hammersmith Hospital. She completed her medical degree at the University ‘Carol Davila’ in Bucharest, Romania, and went on to complete specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University Hospital of Larisa, Greece. She became registered in the UK in 2014 and gained specialist status in 2018. Dr Papanikolaou further advanced her expertise through a prestigious two-year foetal medicine fellowship at King’s College Hospital under Professor Kypros Nicolaides, earning the Diploma in Foetal Medicine.Her clinical focus includes antenatal ultrasound imaging ranging from dating and anomaly scans to advanced 2D/3D neurosonography and prenatal screening and diagnostic procedures such as NIPT, CVS, and amniocentesis. She has particular expertise in diagnosing and managing placenta accreta spectrum disorder, twin pregnancies, and complex foetal neurological abnormalities.Dr Papanikolaou collaborates closely with obstetric, neonatal, paediatric neurology, and gynaecological surgical teams to deliver personalised care across the North West London Network. In addition to her clinical work, she contributes to foetal medicine education as a core member of the Expert Pregnancy Imaging team and has published research in journals on topics such as vasa praevia and neurosonography.
