About Professor

Asma Khalil is a Professor of Obstetrics specialising in Maternal and Fetal Medicine. She practices as a Consultant at St George's Hospital where she is also the Lead for the Twin and Multiple Pregnancy Service. She has more than 20 years’ experience dealing with complex pregnancies requiring prenatal diagnosis and fetal therapy. In 2022 she was appointed as Vice-President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. In 2021 she was appointed as Director of Fetal Medicine Unit at Liverpool Women's Hospital. She is the Obstetric Lead at the National Maternity and Perinatal Audit (NMPA). She gained her MD at the University of London in 2008. She also holds a Master's degree in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Asma is an innovator, she invented the HAMPTON which is an award-winning digital service that allows pregnant women to safely monitor their blood pressure in the comfort of their homes. Asma is also a National Innovation Accelerator (NIA) Fellow. Alongside her clinical work, Asma has published over 450 peer-reviewed papers, several review articles and many book chapters. She has been awarded many prizes for her research work at both national and international meetings. She was awarded the 2021 FIGO Women's Awards: Recognising Female Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. She has research interests in twin pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis, fetal therapy, hypertensive disorders in pregnancy and fetal growth restriction in pregnancy. Asma is the Editor-in-Chief for the Best Practice & Research Clinical Obstetrics & Gynaecology. She works with the charity Twins Trust and collaborated with them to set up the World-first Twins Trust Centre for Research and Clinical Excellence at St George's Hospital. She is dedicated to the implementation of clinical guidelines in practice and believes that they have the potential to minimise healthcare inequalities across the NHS. She undertook a three-year Fellowship with NICE and has held a membership with the NICE Clinical Standards. Asma was also an Expert Advisor to the NICE Centre for Clinical Guidelines.
